Bowen Therapy · Wangaratta

Gentle bodywork that invites your body to heal.

Bowtech-trained Bowen therapy in Wangaratta. Treats the root cause, not just the symptoms — and tailored treatment plans for wide-ranging benefits.

What it is

A gentle hands-on technique with surprising depth.

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique that uses small rolling movements over specific points on the body — across muscle, tendon, and fascia — followed by strategic pauses.

Those pauses are not breaks. They are when your body does the work — processing the input from the moves and beginning its own healing response. Bowen addresses the whole person and aims to treat the root cause of a problem, not just the symptoms.

It works with your body, not against it, and encourages your body to self-correct. Despite its gentle nature, profound improvements can be made.

What it can help with

Bowen is used for both acute and chronic conditions

Back, neck and shoulder pain

The most common reason people come in. Bowen works with the deep postural muscles and fascia that hold long-term tension — the bits massage often can't reach. Suitable for both acute strains and chronic, recurring pain.

Headaches and migraines

Tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches and migraine patterns often respond well to Bowen, particularly when the trigger sits in the neck, jaw or upper back. Sessions focus on releasing the surrounding fascia and settling the nervous system.

Sciatica

Bowen addresses sciatic pain at the source — the lower back, hips and pelvic alignment — rather than just chasing the pain down the leg. Many people feel meaningful relief inside one to three sessions.

Frozen shoulder

A condition that often resists conventional treatment. Bowen's gentle approach is well-tolerated when the joint is acutely irritable, and the strategic pauses allow the nervous system to reduce its protective guarding around the joint.

Jaw tension and TMJ

Bowen has specific techniques for the jaw, face and cervical spine that ease bruxism (teeth grinding), TMJ dysfunction and the headaches that go with them. Particularly helpful for people who clench under stress.

Knee, ankle and foot issues

From sporting injuries to chronic plantar fasciitis, Bowen treats the lower limb as a kinetic chain — addressing the hip, knee, ankle and foot together rather than treating each in isolation.

Hip pain

Bowen's pelvic and lumbar work is well-suited to hip pain — including bursitis, labral irritation, and post-surgical recovery. Gentle enough to use early in rehabilitation.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Bowen has specific moves for the forearm, wrist and shoulder girdle that can ease the nerve compression and tissue tightness driving carpal tunnel symptoms.

Digestive and bowel issues

Bowen has a long history of supporting people with IBS, bloating, reflux and general digestive sluggishness, by settling the nervous system and addressing the diaphragm and abdominal fascia.

Respiratory issues

Bowen's work on the diaphragm, ribcage and accessory breathing muscles can support people managing asthma, post-viral breathing issues, and chronic chest tightness.

Pregnancy support

Safe and gentle through every trimester. Bowen helps with the aches of a changing body, prepares it for childbirth, and is suitable for postnatal recovery once cleared by your care provider.

Sporting injuries

Supports recovery from acute and chronic sporting injuries. Gentle enough between training sessions, effective enough to keep you moving — for hamstring strains, rotator cuff issues, ankle sprains, tennis elbow, and the rest.

Wear-and-tear from manual work

For tradies, farmers, nurses, and anyone whose body takes a beating at work. Bowen restores movement and eases tension without aggravating already-tired tissue.

Stress and tension

Bowen's effect on the autonomic nervous system is one of its most consistent benefits. People often leave a session feeling lighter and more settled than they have in months — especially when stress has become the body's default state.

Sleep disturbance

When the nervous system stays in a low-level fight-or-flight state, sleep suffers. Bowen helps shift the body back into a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state, which often translates to better sleep within days of a session.

Postural issues

Forward head posture, rounded shoulders, anterior pelvic tilt — Bowen works with the fascia and postural muscles holding these patterns in place, allowing the body to find a more aligned default.

Recovery support

Whether you're recovering from surgery, illness, a fall, or just a depleting period of life, Bowen supports the body's own recovery process. Particularly helpful after long stints in hospital or a course of strong medication.

Gentle Bowen therapy on an infant

Bowen is suitable for newborns through to the elderly, and safe during pregnancy. It can be done in a chair for those with mobility issues. Not sure if it's right for what you're dealing with? Get in touch and I'll give you an honest answer.

A session, simply

What happens when you come in

Common questions

Bowen Therapy FAQ

What does a Bowen Therapy session feel like?

Light pressure, never forceful. Most people describe a session as deeply relaxing — you may find yourself drifting off. The strategic pauses between rolling moves are when your body processes the input and begins its own healing response.

What does Bowen Therapy treat?

Both acute and chronic conditions including back, neck and shoulder pain, headaches and migraines, sciatica, frozen shoulder, jaw tension, knee, ankle and foot issues, hip pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, digestive and bowel issues, respiratory issues, pregnancy support, sporting injuries, the wear-and-tear of physical work, stress, and recovery support.

Is Bowen Therapy safe for everyone?

Yes — Bowen is gentle enough to use safely on newborns through to the elderly, and during pregnancy. If you have a specific health condition, just mention it during your consultation and we'll adapt the session.

How is Bowen different from massage or chiropractic?

Bowen uses small, precise rolling moves and pauses rather than sustained pressure or manipulation. It works with your nervous system, inviting your body to self-correct rather than forcing change. The result is often deeper and longer-lasting than tissue-based approaches alone.

Can I have a massage on the same day as Bowen Therapy?

We recommend waiting a minimum of five days after a Bowen session before any other bodywork — including massage and MSTR — as it may overload the nervous system and interrupt the Bowen reset. Bowen continues to work in the days after your session, and other hands-on therapies during that window can disrupt the response.

How many sessions will I need?

Many people feel a shift after just one or two sessions. For longer-standing or more complex issues, three to four sessions spaced about a week apart is a common starting point. After your first session I'll give you an honest read of what to expect — there's no obligation to book a course up front.
